Volkswagen’s electric lineup is about to change in a big way. The ID.4, the brand’s compact electric SUV, will be replaced by a new model that carries one of the most familiar names in the showroom: the ID. Tiguan. The Tiguan is Volkswagen’s best-selling model worldwide, and this new version brings that name into the electric era.
The ID. Tiguan had its world premiere in October 2026, and Volkswagen’s CEO has also confirmed that a second-generation ID. Buzz is in development. This guide sums up what has been announced so far and what is still to come.
The ID. Tiguan Will Replace the ID.4
The ID. Tiguan is the planned successor to the ID.4 in North America. It is built on MEB+, an upgraded version of Volkswagen’s electric vehicle platform, and it gets a new body, a new cabin and new technology.
Volkswagen will launch the ID. Tiguan in Europe at the start of 2027. North American timing, trim names and official Canadian range ratings will be announced after that European launch. The specifications shared so far belong to the European model, so the figures in this guide give you a first look at what the ID. Tiguan can do.
A Squarer Look With More SUV Presence

The ID. Tiguan is designed with Volkswagen’s new Pure Positive design language. The rounded crossover shape of the past gives way to a squarer SUV body with crisp lines and tight surfaces.
Up front, a horizontal light bar holds the LED headlights. Upper versions add an illuminated VW badge in the centre. Classic pull-style door handles also return, and the reshaped front bumper lowers the drag coefficient from 0.27 on the predecessor to 0.26. Wheel sizes range from 19 to 21 inches, and a sporty R-Line version gets its own bumpers, gloss-black trim and R badging.
Physical Buttons Return to the Cabin
The biggest change inside is how you control the vehicle. The steering wheel now uses physical buttons instead of touch controls. The main climate functions sit on a row of buttons in the centre console, and a rotary controller handles audio volume and track changes.
The screens are new too. Drivers get a 10-inch digital instrument display and a 15-inch central touchscreen. An available 12-inch passenger display lets the front passenger use infotainment features and play games. A privacy mode keeps that screen out of the driver’s view, and sound plays through the passenger’s Bluetooth headphones.
There is a fun side as well. Press the View button on the steering wheel and the gauges switch to a Retro display styled after the Golf IV, while the touchscreen can show a virtual garage of six classic Volkswagen models.
Practical touches round out the cabin. Two wireless charging pads hold phones in place with magnets. The cargo area offers 534 litres, growing to 1,577 litres with the rear seats folded, and a 32-litre frunk under the hood stores the charging cable. One-pedal driving is standard, and an available Connected Travel Assist system can help with highway lane changes and stop the vehicle at red lights, within system limits.
Battery, Power and Range: The European Figures

In Europe, the ID. Tiguan comes with three powertrains. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and 4MOTION all-wheel drive is available with the larger battery.

The 58 kWh version accepts DC fast charging at up to 105 kW and charges from 10% to 80% in about 26 minutes. The 77 kWh versions accept up to 165 kW and take about 29 minutes for the same charge. All three charge at up to 11 kW at home on a Level 2 charger. The all-wheel-drive model is the quickest, running from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds.
Canada rates electric range with its own test, so official Canadian range figures will be published when the ID. Tiguan’s North American details are announced.
The ID. Buzz Today, and a Second Generation on the Way
The ID. Buzz brings back the spirit of the classic Volkswagen bus as a fully electric people mover. It seats six or seven, depending on the drivetrain, and every model uses a 91 kWh battery.
- 282 hp with rear-wheel drive and seven seats, or 335 hp with 4MOTION all-wheel drive and six seats with second-row captain’s chairs
- Up to 377 km of range with rear-wheel drive and 372 km with all-wheel drive
- DC fast charging at up to 200 kW, for a 10% to 80% charge in as little as 26 minutes
- Up to 4,120 litres of cargo space with the second row folded and the third row removed
The ID. Buzz also has a future. At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer confirmed that the company is working on an all-new second-generation ID. Buzz. It will move to SSP, Volkswagen’s next-generation electric vehicle architecture, and Volkswagen aims to build it at a lower cost than today’s model. No timing has been announced yet, so this one is further down the road than the ID. Tiguan.
What This Means for Your Next Electric Volkswagen

The ID. Tiguan will become Volkswagen’s core electric SUV, with a traditional SUV shape and physical controls. The ID. Buzz remains the choice for families who need six or seven seats, with a new generation already confirmed. A Volkswagen product advisor can walk you through the electric lineup and share Canadian ID. Tiguan details as soon as they are announced.
